Originally founded in 1946, the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center’s outdoor nature sanctuary encompasses more than 300 acres, 10 miles of trails and natural history museum that introduces visitors to the unique habitats and wildlife of southeastern Connecticut through the seasons focusing on woodlands, wetlands and meadows with live exhibits and birds of prey. In2013, DPNC added the 45-acre Coogan Farm campus on Greenmanville Avenue inMystic, creating a greenway connecting the two campuses that protects critical watershed, early successional habitats and a culturally significant landscape. In keeping with the land’s agricultural heritage, we created a vegetable gardenat Coogan Farm for food production and education programs known as the Giving Garden. Here agriculture, conservation, environmental education, history and the arts interface in a unique way- we have land where we grow nutrient dense food while also protecting native plant communities, bees and other insects that pollinate food plants. The Giving Garden serves as a regional model for environmentally and socially responsible agriculture and land stewardship. All the produce we grow is donated to the United Way’s Gemma E. Moran food bank and distributed to food insecure people throughout Southeastern Connecticut. In 2018 alone, the Giving Garden delivered over 10tons of highly nutritious vegetables to our community. The Garden enables people to connect to the earth via agriculture while also supporting the food deprived in our local community through programs, direct experiences, involvement and volunteerism.
In addition to the Nature Center’s private nature-based preschool, DPNC offers programs, field trips and workshops for all ages starting with infants through pre-school, elementary and secondary school, college, adults and seniors.
